E-Bikes in the Netherlands: Every Type, Model & Price in 2026
From dune trails in Zuid-Holland to rush hour on the Utrechtsebaan, we’ve matched every Dutch terrain to the right e-bike — with real 2026 specs, real euro prices, and exactly where to buy them in the Netherlands. No fluff, just the stuff we’d tell a friend over a bakfiets-length chat.
Off-Road & Rugged Trails: Electric Mountain Bikes (eMTBs)
Let’s be honest: the Netherlands is famously flat — but “flat” ends the moment you hit the Posbank in Gelderland or the climbs around Vaals and Gulpen, where a proper eMTB turns a sweaty grind into a grin. An eMTB gives you a burly frame, 120–160 mm of suspension, chunky tyres and a powerful mid-motor (usually 70–105 Nm) that shrugs off mud and roots. If your weekends look like forest trails at Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe or a trailer-load of bike headed to the Eifel, this is your category.
| Model (2026) | Motor / torque | Battery | Realistic range | Price in NL (from) | Where to buy in the Netherlands |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Specialized Turbo Levo 4 Comp | Specialized 3.1 · 105 Nm | 840 Wh | 4–6 h trail riding | €7,499 (line-up €5,300–€14,499) | Specialized dealers (e.g. Mantel, concept stores) |
| Canyon Neuron:ON AL 7–9 | Bosch Performance CX Gen5 · 85 Nm | 600–750 Wh | 60–100 km mixed | €3,799–€5,499 | canyon.com (direct delivery across NL) |
| Cube Stereo Hybrid ONE44 | Bosch CX · 85 Nm | 625–800 Wh | 60–110 km mixed | from €3,199 | Cube dealers, Mantel.com, Bike24 |
| Decathlon Rockrider E-EXPL 700 | Brose T · 70 Nm | 630 Wh | 60–100 km | €2,499 | decathlon.nl (15+ NL stores) |
| Decathlon Rockrider E-EXPL 140 | Entry trail motor | ~500 Wh | 40–80 km | from ~€1,700 | decathlon.nl |
Prices checked August 2026 from manufacturer and major NL/EU retailers; the S-Works Levo 4 tops the range at €14,499. Always confirm the exact spec at checkout.
Our two cents: the Canyon Neuron:ON is the value king of Dutch trail riding — direct sales keep it thousands under comparable Specialized spec — while the Decathlon E-EXPL 700 at €2,499 is the cheapest honest way we know to ride trails with a proper mid-motor. Test-ride tip: ask the shop to set the sag before the test loop, or you’ll judge the bike completely wrong.

This is the heartland of the Dutch e-bike (“elektrische fiets” if you’re asking in the fietsenwinkel). Upright seating, belt drives you barely maintain, integrated lights, and a Bosch mid-motor that makes the polder wind irrelevant. City e-bikes are what 49% of new Dutch bike buyers chose in 2025 — and it’s actually a slightly smaller slice of a shrinking pie: total e-bike units sold dropped about 4% year-on-year even as prices kept climbing, so buyers are clearly getting pickier, not just buying more.
That pickiness showed in the ANWB‘s big 2026 e-bike group test, which is worth knowing about in some detail if you’re shopping this category. Twelve e-bikes from twelve brands, all priced €3,000–€4,000, went head to head — and every single one scored 7.5 or higher, which tells you how competitive this price band has become. The winner was the Cube Touring Hybrid Comfort SLX with an 8.6, powered by a Bosch Performance PX motor putting out 90 Nm — genuinely strong pull-away for a bike in this price range. Two models tied for second on 8.2: the Merida eSpresso City 875 (praised for real-world range of around 90 km on its highest support setting — riders reported charging roughly every four days on a typical commute) and the Giant NewTour E+1, which stood out as the only bike in the whole test properly suited to carrying both a front and a rear child seat at once. Tested bikes ranged from a fairly light 24 kg up to a hefty 32 kg, so if you’re carrying it up stairs to a flat, weight is worth asking about specifically.
| Model (2026) | Motor / torque | Battery | Realistic range | Price in NL (from) | Where to buy in the Netherlands |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Specialized Turbo Creo 2 (road) | Specialized 1.2 · ~50 Nm | 320 Wh + extender | 60–120 km | from ~€5,000 (Expert €8,500) | Specialized dealers |
Gazelle, Batavus and Sparta are the Dutch holy trinity — their dealer network is the real product: service on every high street. Cowboy and Veloretti sell direct with app-based everything; Decathlon is the budget floor that keeps everyone honest.
Commuter wisdom: for a daily Amsterdam–Zuid or Rotterdam-Centraal run, choose torque (60+ Nm) and a belt drive over top speed. You’ll stop at traffic lights every 400 metres anyway — it’s the pull-away that matters, and mid-motors feel far more natural there. Bosch-motor bikes scored best with ANWB test riders in 2026 for exactly that reason, though as the Giant and Merida results show, it’s not a total Bosch monopoly at the top of the table.
Family Transport: Cargo E-Bikes (Elektrische Bakfietsen)
If you’ve spent any time near a Dutch primary school at half past three, you already know this category by sight. The bakfiets isn’t a niche product here — it’s basically a second family car for a huge number of Dutch households, and 2026’s electric versions make hauling two kids and a week of groceries up a bridge genuinely painless. A proper electric bakfiets needs a strong mid-motor (80+ Nm is the comfortable minimum once you’re loaded up) and a frame rated for real weight — most quote a 80–100 kg payload in the box alone, on top of the rider.
| Model (2026) | Style | Motor / torque | Load capacity | Price in NL (from) | Where to buy in the Netherlands |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urban Arrow Family | 2-wheel, front box | Bosch Performance CX · 85 Nm | up to 3–4 kids / ~100 kg | €5,299 | Urban Arrow dealers NL (Amsterdam-built) |
| Urban Arrow Shorty Performance | 2-wheel, compact box | Bosch Performance · 75 Nm | 2 kids / shorter wheelbase for tight streets | €3,999 | Urban Arrow dealers NL |
| Babboe Curve Mountain | 2-wheel, wooden box | Yamaha PW-X3 · 85 Nm | up to 4 kids | €3,899 | Babboe dealers NL (Amersfoort-based brand) |
| Gazelle Makki Travel HMB | Compact “moederfiets” style | Bosch Performance Line · 65 Nm | 2 child seats | €3,499 | Gazelle dealers NL |
| Cortina E-U4 Family | Compact box bike | Mid-motor · ~60 Nm | 2 kids | from ~€2,699 | Cortina dealers NL — budget entry point |
| Urban Arrow Cargo L / XL | 3-wheel, business/heavy use | Bosch Cargo Line · 85 Nm | up to 275–300 kg | from €6,999 (excl. VAT) | Urban Arrow dealers — commercial/delivery use |
Prices checked August 2026. Urban Arrow and Babboe are the two names you’ll see on nearly every school run in the Randstad — Urban Arrow leans premium and is built in Amsterdam, Babboe is the more budget-friendly Dutch challenger.
Worth budgeting for: insurers increasingly expect a GPS tracker on a cargo e-bike given how targeted they are for theft, and most owners spend another €500–€900 in the first year on rain covers, extra child-seat straps and a proper anchor lock — then roughly €300+/year after that for servicing a bike that’s carrying serious weight daily. Don’t let the sticker price be the only number you budget for.
Sand, Snow & Loose Surfaces: Fat-Tire E-Bikes
The fatbike is the most Dutch e-bike phenomenon of the decade — they made up around 13% of new e-bike sales, and you’ll see them parked outside every beach paviljoen from Scheveningen to Bloemendaal. Those 4-inch tyres run at low pressure and float over sand, mud and snow like nothing else. Most are folding, most ship EU-legal (250 W, 25 km/h), and most cost less than you’d think. Just buy a compliant one — more on the rules below, because 2026 is exactly the year you don’t want a tweaked bike in your shed.
| Model (2026) | Motor / torque | Battery | Realistic range | Price in NL (from) | Where to buy in the Netherlands |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engwe Engine Pro 2.0 | 250 W · 75 Nm (EU-legal) | 768 Wh (48V 16Ah) | 80–120 km PAS | €1,399 | engwe.com (EU warehouse delivery) |
| Engwe Engine Pro 3.0 Boost | 250 W · 90 Nm, full suspension | ~800 Wh+ | up to ~130 km PAS | €1,699–€1,949 | engwe.com / EU resellers |
| Himiway D5 “Zebra” | 250 W EU version | ~960 Wh | 80–120 km PAS | ~€2,000–€2,459 | himiway EU site & NL resellers (EU stock) |
PAS = pedal-assist range; real-world throttle-heavy riding cuts that roughly in half. EU versions are limited to 250 W / 25 km/h to stay legal as bicycles.
Don’t buy a “snelle” tweaked fatbike: a fatbike that assists beyond 25 km/h or runs a throttle-only mode is legally a moped in the Netherlands — no plate, no insurance, no mercy: fines and seizure. Stick to compliant 25 km/h models, and see the rules section below for exactly why fatbikes specifically are under so much political scrutiny right now.
Mixed Terrain & Gravel: Gravel / Adventure & Hybrid E-Bikes
If your typical ride is half fietspad, half forest track — say a loop over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug or the gravel-ish klinker lanes of Groningen — you want a gravel/adventure e-bike (drop bars, light assist, big tyre clearance) or a hybrid (flat bars, suspension fork, do-anything geometry). Gravel e-bikes use light motors (TQ, Bosch SX, Specialized 1.2) so they still ride like bikes when the assist is off; hybrids use full-fat Bosch motors for loaded touring and weekday commuting alike.
| Model (2026) | Motor / torque | Battery | Realistic range | Price in NL (from) | Where to buy in the Netherlands |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canyon Grizl:ONfly CF (e-gravel) | Bosch SX · ~55 Nm | 400 Wh | 50–90 km | from €5,499 | canyon.com |
| Trek Checkpoint+ SL 5/6 (e-gravel) | TQ HPR50 · 50 Nm | 360 Wh | 50–80 km | from ~€6,000 | Trek dealers NL (trekbikes.com locator) |
| Specialized Turbo Creo 2 (e-gravel/road) | Specialized 1.2 · ~50 Nm | 320 Wh + extender | 60–120 km | from ~€5,000 | Specialized dealers |
| Cube Touring Hybrid One (hybrid/trekking) | Bosch · 50–75 Nm | 500–600 Wh | 60–120 km | from ~€2,999 | Cube dealers, Mantel |
| Trek Allant+ 7 Gen 2 (hybrid) | Bosch Performance · 65 Nm | 500–625 Wh | 60–110 km | ~€3,800 | Trek dealers NL |
| Cube Cross Hybrid One (hybrid) | Bosch Performance · 65–75 Nm | 500–625 Wh | 60–110 km | from ~€2,800 | Cube dealers, Bike24 |
Rule of thumb: drop bars + light motor = sportier, longer rides on mixed ground (Grizl:ONfly, Checkpoint+, Creo 2). Flat bars + full motor = comfort, cargo and commuting (Touring Hybrid, Allant+, Cross Hybrid). If you’re only ever on asphalt, save your money and go back to the city table.
Flat Paths & Boardwalks: Cruiser E-Bikes
Cruisers are the holiday mood of the e-bike world: laid-back seating, wide balloon tyres, swept-back bars and exactly zero hurry. Perfect for the Scheveningen boulevard, the Afsluitdijk cycle path or a slow loop around the Vecht. Electra — the cruiser specialist owned by Trek — is the easiest brand to find and service in the Netherlands, with real euro prices from the Dutch Electra store:
| Model (2026) | Motor / torque | Battery | Realistic range | Price in NL | Where to buy in the Netherlands |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electra Townie Go! 5i | Bosch Active · 40 Nm | ~500 Wh | 50–100 km | €2,799 | Electra/Trek dealers NL |
| Electra Townie Commute Go! 5i | Bosch Active · 40 Nm | ~500 Wh | 50–100 km | €2,799 | Electra/Trek dealers NL |
| Electra Townie Path Go! 10D EQ | Bosch Active+ · 50 Nm | 500 Wh | 60–110 km | €3,499 | Electra/Trek dealers NL |
Electra’s Flat Foot geometry lets you put both feet flat on the ground at stops — lovely at beach-bar terraces and school gates alike. Many Dutch shops also stock cruiser-style e-bikes from Vogue and Popal at roughly €1,500–€2,000 if you want the look for less.
🧭The Terrain-to-Bike Matcher & the Numbers Behind It
Still undecided? This little matcher is how we think about it in the shop: match the surface, then match the budget. One category doesn’t fit neatly on a terrain map, though — cargo e-bikes get picked by what you’re carrying, not what’s underneath your wheels, so we’ve kept that one as its own section above rather than forcing it onto the diagram below.

⚖️Dutch E-Bike Rules in 2026 (the 2-minute version)
Good news first: a legal e-bike (250 W motor, assist cutting out at 25 km/h) is treated exactly like a regular bicycle in the Netherlands — no helmet, no licence, no licence plate, no mandatory insurance. You can ride it in every fietspad and fietsstraat in the country. A compliant fatbike falls under the same rules.
Speed pedelecs (45 km/h) are a different animal: they need a helmet meeting ECE standards, an AM licence, a yellow moped plate and insurance. And there’s a genuinely important change working its way through parliament right now: a proposed law, going to the Tweede Kamer in autumn 2026, would make helmets mandatory from September 2027 for everyone under 18 riding e-bikes and fatbikes — and, in a detail a lot of coverage misses, it would also cover electric cargo bikes, since a fatbike-only rule turned out to be legally unworkable to draft cleanly. The reason it’s moving is genuinely sobering: reported brain injuries among 12-to-18-year-olds after e-bike crashes have roughly sextupled since 2020, and fatbike-related casualties went from essentially zero in 2020 to 301 in 2024. Nothing is final yet — the consultation only closed in June 2026 — but if you’re buying for a teenager, it’s worth budgeting the €50 or so for a decent helmet now rather than having that argument next September.
| Vehicle | Assist limit | Helmet? | Licence / plate? | Where it rides |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-bike / pedelec (incl. compliant fatbike & cargo bike) | 25 km/h · 250 W | No (recommended; may become mandatory under-18 from Sept 2027) | No / no | Cycle paths, like a bike |
| Speed pedelec | 45 km/h | Yes (ECE-22.05/06) | AM licence / moped plate | Moped lane (bromfietspad) |
| Tweaked / throttled fatbike | >25 km/h | Yes | Required — treated as moped | Nowhere legal until registered |
The fun rule — the one that pays you: the Dutch company bike scheme lets you lease an e-bike through your employer with just 7% bijtelling, typically saving 30–40% versus buying privately. As a concrete example: on a €3,000 bike, that 7% works out to €210 of taxable benefit a year, which at a typical 37.56% tax bracket costs you roughly €79 a year — call it €6.60 a month — for a bike that would otherwise cost €3,000 up front. Since 1 June 2026, the Belastingdienst confirmed this same 7% deal now applies even if you lease more than one bike, with no fixed cap on how many. On top of that, employers can now reimburse €0.25 per kilometre tax-free for bike commuting in 2026 — that’s up from €0.23 the year before, a change confirmed retroactively to 1 January 2026. Ask your HR department before you pay retail; the maths genuinely surprises most people.
🛒Where to Buy E-Bikes in the Netherlands
Three routes, each with its own logic. We’d always test-ride before spending four figures — every brand below has NL test-ride options.
🏪 The fietsenmaker
Gazelle, Batavus, Sparta, Cube, Trek, Specialized, Urban Arrow, Babboe & Electra all run dense NL dealer networks. You get test rides, free first services and a face to complain to. Best for: city, cruiser, eMTB, cargo, hybrids.
🖥 Brand-direct
Canyon, Veloretti and Cowboy sell direct (Amsterdam showrooms for the latter two), which is why their spec-per-euro beats the shop brands. Best for: e-gravel, urban style, value eMTB.
📦 The big webshops
Mantel.com, fietsenwinkel.nl, Hollandbikeshops.com and Decathlon.nl for new; Upway.nl for professionally refurbished with warranty; Marktplaats for the brave. Best for: deals & budget.
💶Running Costs: the Numbers Nobody Puts on the Price Tag
| Cost item | Typical 2026 price (NL) | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Full charge (0.5–0.8 kWh at ~€0.40/kWh) | €0.20–€0.35 — about 100 km for the price of half a coffee | Every few days |
| Annual service | €75–€150 (€300+ for a heavily-loaded cargo bike) | Yearly |
| Replacement battery | €500–€800 | Every 4–6 years |
| ART2-approved ring lock + chain | €60–€120 | Once (non-negotiable in NL!) |
| Theft insurance | from ~€5–€9/month | Monthly (ANWB / Unigarant etc.) |
| Tax-free commuting reimbursement (if your employer offers it) | up to €0.25/km | Per kilometre, 2026 rate |
E-bike theft is a genuine Dutch epidemic, so treat the lock line as part of the purchase price, not an accessory: two ART-approved locks, one of them anchoring the frame to something fixed. It’s the difference between “annoying story at the borrel” and “€3,000 gone before your koffie koud is”.

Our final word: the “best” e-bike in the Netherlands isn’t the one with the best spec sheet — it’s the one you actually ride, serviced by a shop that’s actually near you. Pick your terrain (or your family situation) above, shortlist two or three models, and go test-ride them all on a windy day. The polder wind is the only honest salesperson left.
